26 Oct Maintaining Your Bespoke Suit
After making an investment in a beautifully handcrafted bespoke dream suit from Brenton & Co, you’re going to want to take care of it the right way. No matter the material, I always stick to these simple five rules when it comes to suit care: hang right, keep your pockets clean, brush it, clean right and pack right.
Hang Right
When it comes to hangers, it’s all about the shoulders. A thin shoulder on a hanger (like wire hangers or shirt hangers) can damage your suit shoulders. This is due to the thin hanger which is nowhere near the shape of your shoulder (hopefully) warping and stretching your suit. Instead, place your suit on a hanger with thick round shoulders to help maintain your handcrafted suit shoulder.
Keep Your Pockets Clean
Simple, try to avoid putting large objects like keys, wallets, phones etc. In your suit pockets for long periods of time. The reason being the same as an improper hanger, it can stress and crease the material and potentially cause some serious damage, so lighten the load.
Brush It
Much like a fine steed, you must brush your suit after a long days ride. Use a suit brush to gently remove any debris that you may have picked up throughout the day. Start from the top and work your way down. Make sure you keep it stable (pun intended). No need to feed it an apple when you’re done.
Clean Right
This could be a tricky one. We are all so used to dry cleaning our workwear. However, dry cleaning can actually damage our precious garments over time through the use of heavy chemicals. To play it safe, try spot cleaning your suit if needed with a micro-cloth, some water and a light spot cleaning spray.
Pack Right
Have a business trip coming up? Use a travel garment bag that enables you to hang your suit as opposed to stuffing it in a suitcase. This is to help avoid unwanted creases and wrinkles, as nobody likes a wrinkled suit.
Stick by these five simple rules and your handcrafted Brenton & Co suit will keep its elegance for years to come.
